Clark Street crash kills one

A Covington man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a wreck that blocked traffic on Clark and West streets around 4:20 p.m.

Johnnie Delmar, 44, was killed after being knocked off his motorcycle. According to a press release from Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright, Delmar was driving a 1998 Kawasaki ZXE motorcycle northbound on West Street heading toward Clark Street. A 2010 Dodge Caliber being driven by 65-year-old Irene Stanford was on West Street at Clark, facing south. She began to turn left and then stopped partially in the northbound lane of West Street after seeing the motorcycle approaching at a high rate of speed.

The two vehicles never made contact; however Delmar reportedly lost control of his motorcycle south of the intersection and flew off his bike. He slid through the intersection and came to rest under the Dodge Caliber. Delmar was first transported to Newton Medical Center and then flown to Atlanta Medical Center where he died from his injuries. Stanford was not injured.

The posted speed limit on West and Clark Streets is 35 m.p.h. The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is conducting the follow-up investigation.
Delmar was employed by Just Dogs. The restaurant will have a donation jar in the store and will be collecting money to offset funeral expenses for the family.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to Johnnie's family and friends, he will be truly missed," reads a post of the Just Dogs Facebook page.
