Oxford man arrested for hit and run

An Oxford man was arrested last week for leaving the scene of an accident in which a Conyers woman was injured.

Mario Hernandez, 20, was arrested on Nov. 25 after he allegedly rear-ended another vehicle at the intersection of Old Salem Road and Hwy. 138 around 11:40 p.m.

According to a witness, Hernandez left the scene and got onto Interstate 20 heading west and the witness followed him while telling a 911 dispatcher the location of the hit-and-run driver.

When officers pulled Hernandez over just inside the Newton County line, he allegedly smelled strongly of alcohol and said he didn't remember being in an accident.

According to the incident report, officers found one 12-pack of beer and an open bottle of beer in Hernandez's vehicle.

He was arrested and charged with failure to report an accident with injuries, following too closely, failure to dim headlights, driving unlicensed, open container of alcohol in passenger compartment, and DUI.

The passenger in the vehicle Hernandez hit complained of a back injury and was transported to the hospital.
