Walk for stomach cancer Saturday

Though most people are not aware, November is Stomach Cancer Awareness Month. Tomorrow, Nov. 17, the first Laps for Life event will be held on the tracks at Alcovy High School. The walk, Laps for Life, will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Winston H. Kelly Sr. Memorial Foundation. All proceeds will be donated to stomach cancer research.

"This foundation was started when Winston passed away in October 2011, after being diagnosed in August 2011 with stage four stomach cancer. The foundation was formed in his memory to educate and assist families touched by this condition," said Denise Kelly. "It's a very quiet cancer, but through research, we have found that it has the second highest mortality rate of all types of cancer. Our goal is to spread awareness about the disease. Most people find out that they have this cancer in the late stages and the chances of surviving are very slim."

The foundation has hosted several fundraisers in the past year to donate toward stomach cancer research and also awarded a $500 book scholarship to a current college student this year.

Registration for Laps for Life will begin Saturday morning between 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at Alcovy High School. T-shirts are included with registration. Kelly suggests that all participants dress warmly. For more information, call the Winston H. Kelly Sr. Memorial Foundation at (678) 658-7638 or visit their winstonkellyfoundation.org.
