Barack Obama wins re-election in tight race

President Barack Obama rolled to re-election Tuesday night, vanquishing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and prevailing despite a weak economy that plagued his first term and put a crimp in the middle class dreams of millions.

As of press time Tuesday night Barack Obama won in Newton County with 21,844 votes, while Mitt Romney had 20,979.
Mitt Romney won in Georgia with 2,000,161 votes and Obama had 1,707,001.

In the end Obama had 290 electoral votes and 49,143,595 popular votes as of press time Tuesday in the United States.

Romney had 200 electoral votes and 49,179,051 popular votes, according to the Associated Press.

In 2008, Newton County voters chose Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama for president.

In 2004, voters in the county to chose switch parties and voted Republican nominee George W. Bush.
