Keith Ellis announced Tuesday his intention to run for chairman of the Board of Commissioners this year, a challenge to an incumbent chairman who has not yet announced her intentions.

Ellis, a former teacher who serves on the Newton County Water and Sewerage Authority and runs a small business, said in a statement Tuesday that he had been considering a run for office for several months.

"I feel that my background and life experiences will inspire your confidence in my ability to serve as Chairman," he said in a letter delivered to The News.

Ellis, a graduate of the University of Georgia, taught in Newton County Schools for 15 years and has operated small businesses locally.

He will have a meet-and-greet at Square Perk Friday morning between 7:15 and 9:30 a.m.

Chairman Kathy Morgan, who has had several clashes with the Board of Commissioners during her tenure, has not announced whether she will run for a second term this year.

District 1 Commissioner Mort Ewing announced earlier this month he would not seek reelection. Former State Sen. John Douglas said he would run for the seat. Ewing was one of three commissioners who pushed to shift oversight of county administration from the chairman's office to the BOC late last year.
