NHS parapro fired, charged with enticing a child

/

A Newton High School assistant coach and paraprofessional has been fired, after being charged with enticing a child for indecent purposes.

James Levert Carter, 27, was arrested Monday. He is accused of sending sexually oriented text messages to a 15-year-old female student at NHS. When her caregiver discovered the messages, she reported it to law enforcement.

Newton County Sheriff’s Lt. Keith Crum said they were able to retrieve messages from Carter’s cell phone, and that he was arrested nearly a week after the accusations were first made.

Deputy Superintendent Dennis Carpenter with the Newton County School System said they were informed of the investigation and terminated Carter on Oct. 24.

“When the school system received notification, due to the nature of the accusations, he was terminated immediately.”

Carter began his work at NHS on Aug. 1. He was the assistant varsity basketball coach.

He received a bond of $2,950 and bonded out of jail in the early morning hours of Oct. 30, hours after his arrest.
