Region champions

Alcovy won the Region 2-AAAAAA crown with a win over Rockdale Friday night.

Alcovy softball was crowned Region 2-AAAAAA champions Friday night after defeating Rockdale 4-0.

The Tigers sealed a top seed in the Class AAAAAA playoffs, hosting West Lake out of Region 3-AAAAAAA on Wednesday.

Alcovy (25-4-1) lost to West Lake 8-5, 2-3, 1-3 in a best-of-three first round last year, but this year have home field advantage on its side.

The Tigers and Rockdale Bulldogs are the two teams out of Region 2-AAAAAA with a guaranteed home game in the opening round of the state playoffs thanks to reaching the region tournament's title game.

Alcovy, which lost just one region game all year, proved too much for the Bulldogs (16-14), tallying 10 hits, compared to just three by Rockdale in the win.

Chelsea Murphy pitched all seven innings for the Tigers, giving up two walks and striking out nine batters.

The region title game remained tied until the fifth inning when Kia Sorrells was hit by a pitch with two outs. After stealing second base, Sorrells was then driven home on Chelsea Murphy's single.

Morgan Beshears flew out to center to end the inning but the damage was done as Murphy threw four strikeouts and allowed just one hit in the final two innings.
The Tigers added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, this time the hits started with the first batter of the inning.

Raven Smith led off with a single, followed by a bunt by Neshia Morris to move her to second and another bunt by Neshia Morris to move her to third. After a strikeout to Chelsie Nolley, Marie Peck drove Smith home on a line drive to center field.

Kalia Johnson then hit a double to score Mobley and Peck.

Kalia Johnson had two hits and drove in three runs for the Tigers.

It was the second time in the region tournament that Alcovy defeated Rockdale, winning 12-4 in the Tigers opening game of the competition.

Alcovy then defeated Luella, the only region team to beat the Tigers in the regular season, 6-1 to advance to the final game against Rockdale.

Alcovy started early in the semifinals as Sorrells reached on an error with one out. Murphy then moved Sorrells to third on a single. Both runners came home on Beshears' hit to left field.

Alcovy added another run in the second inning on an RBI triple by Johnson to score Chelsie Nolley, putting the Tigers up 4-1 heading into the fifth.

Johnson got another hit, a single, and scored a run in the fifth after Murphy's RBI single. Murphy then rounded out the scoring in the seventh inning on a pass ball after reaching on a single. Peck scored earlier in the inning after leading off with a hit-by-pitch and came home on Beshears' single.

Murphy pitched again for the Tigers, against Luella, and allowed seven hits with one earned run. Murphy walked one batter and struck out eight.

Beshears drove in three runs and had three this, along with Murphy who was 3 for 4 with an RBI.

Luella enters the state tournament seeded third and Newton finishes as the fourth seed and will travel to East Coweta in the first round.
