Crime Briefs: Man punches another

Police arrested a man Wednesday night after he reportedly hit another man in the face because he would not give him a cigarette.

While patrolling an area of City Pond Road around 8 p.m., a Covington police officer was approached by a man at the Covington Lodge. The man told police that he had just been assaulted by another man whom he did not know.
The man said for the past week, a man, police identified as Dewyer Smith, had been coming to his room and knocking on his door to request cigarettes.

The man said just before police arrived, Smith came to his room and asked for cigarettes again. When the man refused to give Smith a cigarette, Smith reportedly punched the man in the right cheek and ran away.

The police officer spoke with Smith who was at the front office of the Covington Lodge. Smith approached the officer's patrol car and said, "We just got into an argument about a cigarette" and "Yes, I hit him." Smith said he went to ask the man for a cigarette and when the man refused to give him, he hit him in the face.

Smith was taken to the Newton County Jail and charged with simple battery.

Woman scratches boyfriend's car with steak knife

A woman reportedly damaged her boyfriend's 2006 Monte Carlo after she found phone numbers from other women in his phone.

A Covington police officer responded to a home on Wellington Ridge Drive NE around 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday after receiving a call from an off-duty DeKalb County police officer who reported a man and woman were involved in a family fight. The Covington police officer arrived to the home and spoke with a man who said he was trying to stop his girlfriend Tomeka Jones from damaging his car with a steak knife.

He said he had been arguing with Jones over phone numbers Jones found in his phone and she told him to get out of the home and threw his belongings over the railing and onto the yard. When the man went outside to pick up his belongings to leave, Jones came outside with a steak knife and started scratching the hood of his car.

The man said he grasps Jones arms to try and stop her from scratching his car further, but he did not hit her.

He then threw the knife across the parking lot. Jones told police that she scratched her boyfriend's car because she was mad and upset about the other girls' numbers she found in his phone.

She said her boyfriend did grasp her arms to stop her from scratching the car, but he did not hit her.

Jones was arrested for criminal damage to property and family violence.
