Social Circle municipal judge resigns

Social Circle municipal court judge Jeff Foster is stepping down, after Social Circle city council members unanimously accepted his resignation at their meeting on Tuesday night.

Mayor Hal Dally appointed Mayor Pro-Tem David Kenner as a chairman, council member Angela Porter and Judge Foster to a committee that will select a new judge.

City Manager Doug White said in a phone interview on Friday that Foster is stepping down to work on some other projects that will prohibit him from being a judge.

"We're putting out a request for qualifications for attorneys who may want to apply to be the judge and [the] committee will screen the resumes that come in and qualifications that come in and then they'll select the ones they want to interview and then the full council will do interviews," White said.

"We've got [a request for proposal] ready to go out the first part of the week. We're asking for them to have all of their qualifications in by Sept. 10. That will give the council members a week to get together and look through the submittals and then have some folks to start interviewing," he said.

White said Foster will continue to serve as a judge until the city finds someone to fill his position.

In other business, council approved an amendment to allow Sunday alcohol sales. The amendment allows package sales by retailers of malt beverages and wine on Sundays between 12:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. and pouring for consumption on the premises of distilled spirits, malt beverages and wine on Sundays between 12:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Council also discussed appointments to the ethics committee, library board and planning and zoning board at their meeting.
