Tax-free weekend details

Full list of tax-free items

Newton County residents will be able to stretch their wallets a little further this weekend, as Georgia will have its first tax-free holiday since 2009 this Friday and Saturday, according to Associated Press reports.

The holiday comes too late for Newton County students who started school last Friday, but parents and students can get a bargain on those last minute school supplies.

WHAT: General school supplies along with clothing and computers will be exempt from the state's sales tax. Exemptions exclude clothing accessories, cellular devices, furniture, computer-related accessories designed for recreational use, and general school supplies with a sales price more than $20.

WHEN: The tax-free holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 10 and end on midnight of Aug. 11.

WHERE: Stores carrying school supplies, computers and/or clothing.

WHY: The tax-free holiday in Georgia give parents and students a break on back to school shopping.

A clothing item cannot cost more than $100; a sampling of clothing accessories not approved include jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, eye-wear, watches and watchbands. Personal computers and personal computer-related accessories cannot have a sales price above $1,000. Example of school items not exempt include: books (except children's books, dictionaries and thesauruses), briefcases, envelopes, janitorial and medical supplies and supplies used in a trade or business.

Georgia has a long list of items approved for the tax holiday weekend.
