Social Circles OKs Sunday alcohol sales

Social Circle voters said yes to Sunday alcohol sales during the primary election on Tuesday.

Election results from the Walton County Board of Elections Office show that 390 people (57.44 percent) voted yes to Sunday package alcohol sales and 289 people (42.56 percent) people voted no. When it came to alcohol sales by the drink, 397 people (58.90 percent) voted yes and 277 (41.10 percent) people voted no.

Social Circle city manager Doug White said he was pleased with the vote and hoped it would mean more local sales.

"We had a merchant here in town who had been losing business on the weekend because stores around him were making sales," White said. "I think it will be good for citizens. They can stay here and buy local. It saves them gas and time. It also makes their lifestyle more convenient."

White said Freshway Market called the city a couple of times voicing their concern about their sales going down. He said when other surrounding cities like Monroe and Covington passed referendums for Sunday alcohol sales, Freshway Market and other businesses saw their sales decline.

He said the questions for alcohol sales on Sunday were supposed to be on the ballot in November, but for some reason it wasn't because the questions weren't worded right.

White said he thinks the referendum will do well now that it has passed and thanked the voters for making the decision.

"We appreciate the voter turn out and we appreciate people voting their conscious."

Social Circle Mayor Hal Dally also agreed alcohol sales on Sunday would be good for merchants in the city. He said it would help keep Social Circle on the same level as other cities.

"We need to make sure that all of our merchants are on equal footing with surrounding communities," Dally said.

As far as when the measure would be changed, Dally said they were working quickly to make the changes.

"We will work as fast as we can to amend our ordinance to allow Sunday alcohol sales. We've got an attorney working on it now. I don't know what kind of time frame we have, but as soon as possible," he said.
