John Richard Moore

John Richard Moore, 71, of Gallatin, Tenn., passed away July 22. Born April 2, 1941, in Newton County, he is the son of John Howard Moore (Billie) of Jackson and Eudell Norton (William) of Covington.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Judith Hester Moore; daughters Leigh Moore Bohannon (Mike) of Gallatin and Susan Moore McKenzie of Southaven, Miss.; sisters Maxine Northcutt (Bud), Dianne Wagner (Larry), and Gail Alexander all of Covington; and grandchildren Stewart Oldham, Brooks Bohannon, Kevin McKenzie and Ellen McKenzie.

A 1959 graduate of Newton County High School, Richard attended Austin Peay State University on a football scholarship, graduating in 1963. He taught and coached at Rockdale County High School from 1963 to 1970. After receiving his master's degree from APSU in 1971, Mr. Moore became athletic director and head basketball coach at Volunteer State Community College, where he worked from 1971 to 2011.

As quarterback at APSU, Richard set 11 national records. He was inducted in 2002 to the Tennessee Community College Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Tenn., and was honored by Volunteer State with the dedication of the John Richard Moore gymnasium. He was bestowed the honor of Faculty Emeritus at Volunteer State by the Tennessee Board of Regents. An avid golfer and fisherman, Mr. Moore is a beloved husband, father, brother and friend who will be deeply missed but fondly remembered forever by family and friends.

Funeral services wereheld today, July 25, from the chapel of Family Heritage Funeral Home with Dr. Larry Yarbrough officiating. Interment followed at Crestview Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Volunteer State Community College Foundation in care of the John Richard Moore Scholarship Fund, 1480 Nashville Pike, Gallatin, TN 37066.
