A worker at Nisshinbo, a brake manufacturer off Ga. Highway 142, suffered second degree burns Thursday afternoon, when several hundred gallons of hydrogen peroxide spilled out of a container that was being loaded onto a truck.

According to Covington Assistant Fire Marshal Tony Smith, roughly 350 gallons of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide spilled when a forklift driver lost control of his truck, dropping the container which then split. Other than the one worker who was transported to Grady Hospital "in pain, but in good spirits," no one else was injured.

Fire officials used roughly 1,500 gallons of water to wash the area where the spill occurred turning the peroxide into 99 percent water by the time it hit the retention pond, meaning it will be of no danger to persons, plants or animals. Smith said by that time that it was weaker than peroxide found in most homes.
