4th of July contingency plans

With the forecast calling for thunderstorms tomorrow, many residents of Covington, Porterdale, Oxford, and Social Circle are left wondering whether or not the festivities for the Fourth of July will go on as planned.

Porterdale and Oxford officials said events will take place rain or shine.

Covington's Concert on the Square with the community band directed by T.K. Adams will continue tomorrow rain or shine as well.

"If the storms interfere with the festivities, then the concert will take place at Eastside High School's auditorium," Director of Main Street Josephine Kelly stated in a phone interview. "People can look for updates on the location of the concert on Downtown Main Street's Facebook page or the Arts Association website closer to the time of the event."

Oxford City Hall will host a parade beginning at 9 a.m. with the line-up beginning at Haygood Avenue. The parade will begin promptly at 10 a.m. Since there is no sign-up or pre-registration to be in the parade, everyone who would like to participate is welcomed.

"Since the event is earlier in the day, we are counting on good weather that morning," a representative from Oxford City Hall said. "If there is any rain then the parade will just be delayed the amount of time needed, but either way we will have the parade."

Porterdale will begin its sixth annual July 4th celebration Wednesday in the town's Historic Mill Village. The parade will begin at 4 p.m. and will feature music from AmeriCopia and Studio 253 featuring Isaac Bramblett performing in the Alley from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. The wrestling cage match will take place from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. and fireworks will follow.

"No matter what there will be fireworks," Porterdale City Hall said.

Social Circle will have their fourth of July activities beginning with an antique car show on E. Hightower Road from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. followed by a parade at 5:30 p.m. on Cherokee Road/Ga. Highway 11.

A gospel concert will be held later in the evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Social Circle High School featuring artists such as Luke Carter, Austin Wallace, Crystal Padilla, Spiritual Tones, Gospelettes and Savannah Martin. Food vendors will be at both the concert and concert.

The town's fireworks are expected to start after 9:30 p.m. and will last around 25 minutes.

We will have more information about Social Circle back-up plans for the Fourth of July later on.
