Sherwood signs with WGTC

Gabrielle Sherwood was intent on having her last basketball game be in the Georgia Class AAAA Final Four.

However, her father,David, knew she had what it took to play at the next level.

He reached out to Marco Mason coach of West Georgia Technical College, and enlightened him to the talents of his daughter.

Mason liked what he saw in the gritty Gabrielle Sherwood and offered her a scholarship, which she signed at Alcovy Tuesday.

Gabrielle will bring a ton of intangibles to the Carrolton two-year school just as she did to the Tigers.

"She's a great intangible kid," Alcovy coach Kidada Holtzclaw said. "Gaby doesn't do a lot of things that are going to show up in the stat book, she does all the things that you have to have.

"She's like a junkyard dog; she's going to play great defensively, get hustle plays and she's going to get deflections. Those types of things don't show up in the state book but those are pivotal things that are going to win games."

Sherwood was one of the keys to helping Alcovy compile a 27-5 record in its best season in school history. The Tigers reached the final four for the first time ever, where it fell to eventual state champions Miller Grove 42-34.

"She's helped us reach a lot of our goals," Holtzclaw said. "We're proud of Gaby. I think she is deserving of being able to have an opportunity to go on and play after her high school years. She's put in four years of hard work.

She's been a player that we depended on for four years."

Going on to WGTC, Gabrielle is not only looking forward to continuing to play basketball but also to continue her studies toward becoming a computer programmer. She will be pursuing a degree in computer science.

"I think she'll do fine at the next level," Holtzclaw said. "She's a hard worker. She works hard in the offseason and she plays year-round. That will benefit her during her collegiate years. After meeting Coach Mason I think he'll do a good job with the program. I think they'll be happy with what they get out of Gaby."
