Local Girl Scouts collect blood

TV vampires aren't the only ones collecting blood in Covington; so is a local girl scout troop and for a good cause.

Girl Scout Troop 575 completed their 50 hours of community service Thursday by hosting a blood drive from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m at the old Mayfield's store in downtown Covington.

Troop leader Kim Ferrell, said the girls chose to host a blood drive as a way to help out beyond Covington.

"From the reports they filled out, I can tell you they decided to do this because it helps everybody, not just Covington," Ferrell said. "It's not just for somebody in the hopsital or somebody who gets into a car accident, it can be used for so many different things."

Prior to Thursday's blood drive, girl scouts learned about how blood can not only be used for those in emergency care, but it is also used to make medications for people.

The scouts partnered with the Athens Red Cross and were on deck to greet and register donors, along with supplying them with snacks, like girl scout cookies, after they donate.

Ferrell said troop members also spent a lot of time preparing for the event and worked with the Red Cross to advertise, plan and recruit volunteers for the drive.

"They put a lot of hard work into this," Ferrell said.
