A record number of participants competed Saturday in the 11th Annual Cheerios Challenge organized by the Covington Family YMCA.

This year, the Cheerios Challenge had 1,115 participants, a jump up from last year 989 participants.

In total, there were three races: 10K, 5K and a one-mile Fun Run.

More than $12,000 was raised for the YMCA Partner with Youth Program which provides for children and their families to participate in YMCA programs who otherwise could not afford it.

Louly Hay-Kapp, Executive Director of the Covington Family YMCA, was thankful to the more than 100 volunteers who helped with the event as well as the sponsors.

“[We] express our gratitude to the Covington Police officers led by Lt. Al Miller who kept the roads and race route safe for our participants,” said Hay-Kapp. “Also, thanks to our sponsors Advantage Fire, BB&T, General Mills, Sunbelt Builders and The Covington News.”

The 10K race winners were Alexis Kenyrick with a time of 39:07 and Allene Haynie with a time of 47:30. The 5K race winners were Zach Braden with a time of 18:32 and Joann Walls with a time of 22:10. The one-mile Fun Run winners were Conrad Martin Jr. with a time of 7:16 and Abigail Scharf with a time of 7:30.
