Newton suffers heartbreaking defeat

Newton had a five-run lead disappear late Tuesday in a 6-5 loss to Newnan.

Newton's starting pitcher, Sherman Graves, shutout the Cougars through the first four innings on three hits and five strikeouts.

But in the bottom of the fifth, facing the bottom of Newnan's batting order, two walks brought up the top of the lineup and, two singles later, Newnan had its first two runs. An untimely error on a potential double-play ball that could have ended the inning opened the flood gates. The Cougars scored six times before the inning ended on two more hits and a second error.

The Rams balanced offense of 11 hits was led by two hits each by Daniel Croom, Zack Sullivan, and Shawn Guckenberger. Until the fifth inning, the Rams played error-free ball defensively with sophomore MJ Boykin involved in six putouts.

Up 3-0 in the top of the fourth, Jeremy Laguins took advantage of a drawn in third baseman wary of the bunt by lining a single just over his outstretched glove. Tripp Loftin walked and then Graves delivered a two out two-run double to deep left to stretch the Ram lead to 5-0.

The Rams take on Langston-Hughes today.
