Covington Lions to have annual BBQ

On June 18, 2012, the Covington Lions Club will celebrate its 60th anniversary serving the citizens of Newton County. There will be more releases and maybe a celebration on that day. But first the club is inviting people to its third fundraiser this year-its 40th Annual Chicken BBQ on Wednesday, April 11, from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. at the Academy Springs Park Pavilion on Conyers Street.

Tickets are now available from any Lion or at the door. Plates are $7 and include a half chicken slow-roasted over an open wood pit, cole slaw, bread, chips and iced tea. Desserts will be available for a donation. A drive-through pick-up will also be available at the Legion Hall parking lot across the street.

Lions welcome businesses to place multiple orders for their employees.

"An appreciation lunch or dinner would certainly put smiles on their faces," the club said in a press release.

Orders for more than 25 can be delivered. Call (770) 860-1414 to place your company order. Visit its website for more information at www.covingtongalion.org. The Georgia Council for the Blind will have an "informational" booth outside at its clubhouse.

Lions heavily support the Georgia Lighthouse Foundation, which provides community vision screening and literature; the Emory Children's Eye Center, which offers cutting-edge genetic research and operations for children; Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, which provides personal growth experiences for children, teens and adults with visual impairments through the use of recreation, education, socialization and rehabilitation in an outdoor setting; Leader Dogs for the Blind, Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF); and the Georgia Lions All-State Band. The club also gives six scholarships to two graduating seniors from Alcovy, Eastside and Newton high schools. The Lions also coordinate the annual Christmas Parade-a must see event welcoming the holiday season.

"We look forward to seeing everyone again and welcome new faces to join this exciting event," the club said. "Not only is the food scrumptious, but fellowship is also enjoyed by all."
