Social Circle resident Dana Baynes, 31, was shot and killed Sunday evening, while attending a party on Holly Street in Social Circle.

Baynes was reportedly shot by fellow resident Preston Holt, 45, who was arrested shortly after the shooting was called in to police at 9:45 p.m., Public Safety Director Tom Fox said Monday. Holt is being charged with murder.
Holt reportedly drove past 420 Holly St. and shot Baynes, who was transported to Walton Medical Center where he later died from his wounds, Fox said. While the two men knew each other, Fox said the motive was unclear.

A Social Circle police officer arrested Holt at 10:03 p.m., based on information obtained from eyewitness accounts. Holly Street is only one street down from the police department's office on E. Hightower Trail.

Holt lives at 326 E. Hightower Trail, according to the Walton County Detention Center booking sheet. He is being held without bond.

Fox said this is the first homicide to occur in Social Circle in more than two years.

Officials from the Social Circle Police Department, Walton County Sheriff's Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Walton County District Attorney's office are working the investigation, Fox said, noting that the assisting agencies helped interview numerous eyewitness.

"Two Social Circle residents. They knew each other in some manner. Don't know what the motive was other than the one (drives) up to the other one and shoots him and takes off and then we get the call. And then based on eyewitness accounts we were able to locate the subject and make the arrest," Fox said. "It's unfortunate something like this happened in a small community, but we're proud of our officers responding quickly, making the arrest and taking the suspect into custody."
