Spring cleaning time

One of the issues we continually bring attention to is the litter problems we have in Newton County. It seems to us that as we try to grow economically, prospective businesses might have second thoughts when they see our litter.

We don’t believe the majority of the citizens of Newton County litter our byways and highways. Rather, we feel it is being done by a few of the thoughtless people, who either pass through the county or just could not care less.

If you feel that way too, you, your place of business or your professional organization can sign up to clean an area of the county on Saturday, March 24.

The Keep Covington/Newton Beautiful committee is looking for volunteers for their annual Great American Cleanup day which will be held March 24. They are asking volunteers to meet at our local Longhorn Steakhouse on U.S. Highway 278 at 9 a.m.

Each year, volunteers throughout the nation join forces and walk along highways and roads picking up trash on the same day. Locally, the efforts translate into a cleaner, brighter community.

The KCNB group will distribute T-shirts while they last, provide a breakfast, litter bags and orange vests for your protection.

A study conducted by the national Keep America Beautiful committee determined that litter decreases property values by 7 percent. That’s a pretty healthy devaluation. In these economic times, we need our community to be worth as much as possible.

If you would like to get involved contact KCNB at (770) 784-2015 or go to newtonclean@co.newton.ga.us.

Let’s all work together to keep Newton County clean.
