Eastside soccer teams remain winless after boys' tie, girls lose

Jacob Alwes' header off a long cross from the right foot of Levi Rhodes preserved a 2-2 tie for Eastside against Apalachee on Friday night.

The Eagles (0-1-1) fell behind 0-1 at the 24:25 mark, before Rhodes would tie it for the first time. His 40-yard free kick with 9:26 left in the first half proved too much for the Apalachee keeper.

The Wildcats (0-0-2) regained the lead, 2-1, at the 2:45 mark on a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box.
Alwes just missed connecting with Trent Taylor right in front of the Wildcats goal for what would have been the game winner with only 3 minutes left.

In the opening game of the double-header, the Eastside girls fell 4-2.

The Lady Eagles (1-1) allowed a quick goal by Apalachee (2-0) in the first minute of play, forcing them to play catch up for most of the first half. With 19:30 left, Becka McKelvey recorded her first varsity goal off a corner kick from Kari Dylong to tie the match at 1-1.

Savannah Hill made an outstanding defensive play to stop a shot on an empty Eastside net at the 11:50 mark. The Lady Wildcats took a 2-1 halftime lead with a goal with 4:28 on the clock. Eastside keeper Carly Farrow made six first-half saves.

The Lady Wildcats took control of the match in the second half and eventually notched two goals inside of 1 minute to take a 4-1 lead with 31:40 remaining. Apalachee kept the Lady Eagles on their heels until about 23 minutes were left in the contest at which point play began to flow back and forth with Eastside getting a corner and a free kick just before the halfway point of the second half.

In the final 10 minutes, the Lady Eagles created three separate scoring opportunities but were unable to finish any of them. With only 2:28 remaining, Sarah Gaddis scored off another Kari Dylong corner to make it 4-2, Apalachee. Farrow made eight saves in the second half to bring her total to 14 on the night.

Both Eastside teams travel to AAAAA Archer next Tuesday with the girls game set for a 5:30 p.m start and the boys game following at 7:30 p.m.
