Washington St. revitalization planned

Covington officials want to revitalize the Washington Street commercial corridor, which was the city's original industrial center, and have set aside this weekend to discuss the task in depth.

Citizens and leaders are invited to meet at 4 p.m., today at The Center, 2104 Washington St., Covington, to participate in a design charette to generate and discuss revitalization ideas.

Designers Peter Drey and Jacob Lindsey will be leading efforts to come up with a redevelopment plan, said Covington Planning Director Randy Vinson.

"We have invited all of the land owners and business owners along the Washington Street corridor to participate in the planning efforts. The first meeting on Friday will be to specifically seek their input regarding what they see as challenges and opportunities and what their specific vision may be. The design team will take that information and begin crafting a plan that incorporates as much of their vision as possible. The public is invited to participate too," Vinson said.

Subsequent meetings will allow everyone to provide feedback to the design team as the ideas are put on paper and discussed in more detail, he said.

The first review session will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at The Center, and the final review session will be at 3 p.m. Sunday. From that point, the design team will work on revising and finishing the plan and incorporate the comments from the review sessions, Vinson said.

The public will be able to follow progress and offer input via the website covingtonworkshop.com, which was set up just for this purpose.
