Conyers Food Lion to close

The parent company of Food Lion announced Wednesday the Conyers location for the grocery store chain would be closing within 30 days.

The Conyers Food Lion, located on Ga. Highway 20, behind the Stock Market and Sonic, opened July 2010 and employed about 60 people.

The closure is part of a move to close 113 Food Lion stores that were "underperforming Food Lion stores, primarily in markets in which the company has the least store density," according to the company press release.

"Food Lion is focused on repositioning our business for future growth," said Cathy Green Burns, president of Food Lion. "By closing underperforming stores, we will continue to position Food Lion for success, especially in light of our brand strategy results."

Ron Hodge, CEO of Delhaize America, Food Lion's parent company, said in a released statement,. "While these were difficult decisions given the impact on our associates, customers and communities, we believe these actions will enable us to better serve our customers in our markets with high density, while positioning the company for future growth."

Delhaize America operates more than 1,600 stores in 16 states in the eastern United States, under the names of Bottom Dollar Food, Food Lion, Harveys, Hannaford Supermarkets, Reid's and Sweetbay. Delhaize America employs approximately 107,000 full-time and part-time associates.
