From the Oxford Post Office

To the editor: With reference to the Oct. 28 letter to the editor entitled "The Woes of Oxford" and the possibility of the closing of the Oxford Post Office, I would like to offer these comments on behalf of the Oxford Post Office.

The U.S. Postal Service is facing the worst financial crisis in its history. This is due, in part, to the public's changing mailing habits, the rapid adoption of electronic communications and the electronic diversion of bill payments and other statements away from traditional hard copy. The downturn in the economy that has gripped this nation for the past several years has also played a major role in the overall reduction of mail volume.

Postal management has taken several steps to address the current financial conditions at the national level, including studying the consolidation of operations and Post Offices where it's practical to do so without significant impact on our customers.

The situation is not unique to Oxford. It's happening all across the country. While we are one of the offices where there have been some recent operational changes, no definite decision has been made to close the Oxford Post Office, Until a decision has been made, we will continue to operate as usual and provide the best possible service to our customers.

The Postal Service does not rely on taxpayer dollars, so revenue from the sale of postage and postal products and services is critical to the organization. Unfortunately, when rumors spread that the closing of a Post Office is imminent, that can affect the buying habits of our customers as well as the confidence they have that we will be here to serve their postal needs. We want customers of the Oxford Post Office to know that we are still here to serve them courteously and efficiently every day, and we will continue to do so as long as our doors remain open.

We welcome our customers, we value our customers and we need our customers.
