Wild night of football ends in mass disappointment

Everything that could go wrong for the three Newton County football teams did go wrong Friday night. Newton win but lost, Eastside beat itself and Alcovy forgot to pack its game on the bus and left it at school then got pounded in the region championship game.

Eastside needed a win at Henry County to make the playoffs but came away with a 34-24 loss instead.

The Eagles trailed 27-24 with two minutes remaining in the game but fumbled a punt return and the Warhawks recovered then scored to make it a 10-point game.

Demario Terrell threw a pair of touchdown passes to Dante Blackmon but also threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

Eastside trailed 20-17 late in the fourth quarter when Terrell threw his second pick six.

Justin Bates responded with a long kickoff return down to the Henry County 8 and Blackmon caught a 6-yard touchdown pass to get Eastside with three with 4:01 left in the game.

The defense held Henry County to a three-and-out but Quan Moton tried to make a play on a tough bounce on the punt and was unable to recover the mistake.

In Newnan, Alcovy scored first in the Region 3-AAAA title game against Northgate on Devon Edwards' 45-yard run midway through the opening quarter. But the Vikings roared back with 35 unanswered points over the next 18 minutes and led 35-7 at the half.

Northgate went on to an easy 42-13 win.

The Tigers were unable to stop Northgate's rushing attack. Northgate marched down the field on its ensuing possession after Edwards' score to knot it up at 7-7. The Vikings went 80 yards in 10 plays – all on the ground.

After the Tigers failed to convert a short third down, Northgate struck again with a long punt return down to the 3 to setup its next touchdown.

After two more seemingly easy scoring drives, Northgate landed the knockout punch on the final play of the first half. The Vikings lined up as if they were going to take a knee after getting the ball back with 13 seconds left in the second quarter but instead broke out of the formation and hit a 45-yard pass play in the end zone with no time on the clock.

Alcovy's listless performance wasn't the end all, be all. The Tigers are the No. 2 seed from the region and will play at home next week in the opening round of the Class AAAA playoffs.

Newton needed three things to go its way in order for the Rams to make the playoffs. They got just one of them to happen.

Newton did its part by beating Luella 36-30 in four overtime periods but Newnan lost to East Coweta and the Indians earned the final playoff berth based on their win over the Rams.

Westlake laid an egg against Langston Hughes as the Panthers blew the Lions out 40-18. The Rams needed Westlake and Newnan to win their games. Neither did.

The Rams fought back to score the go-ahead touchdown with 1:40 to play only to watch Luella come back to tie the game at 27 on a field goal with 4 seconds remaining.
