Social Circle keeps garbage costs down

Council members in Social Circle agreed to temporarily suspend the 5 percent franchise fee paid by Advanced Disposal in order to keep the cost of garbage pickup down for residents.

Steve Edwards with Advanced Disposal initially requested that the council increase garbage pickup by 5 percent in order to help defer rising fuel costs, according to minutes released from the Oct. 18 meeting. This request came after seeing a 31 percent increase in fuel rates since September of last year.

After a suggestion by City Manager Doug White, the council voted unanimously to stop collecting the 5 percent franchise fee temporarily (for November and December) and to revisit the issue come January.

The council also agreed to approve the Georgia Department of Transportation’s annual contract for transit services and to approve an amendment to the budget for $4,670 for the cost of a new van.

Additionally, the council agreed to approve the 2010-11 and 2011-12 budgets for SPLOST, police confiscations, hotel tax and Stanton Trust Investment Fund.

Council members also voted unanimously to discuss redistricting after the elections in November.
