Local travel team takes second at South Carolina tournament

The 10-under Mayhem Bad Boys baseball team made a statement this past weekend at South Carolina USSSA Super National Invitational Tournament with second place finish. A strong field of 19 teams from North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina all competed for a guaranteed bid to next year’s Elite 32 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in July. A tournament win would do the trick.

Mayhem went 1-1 in opening pool play, placing them into Sunday’s championship bracket play as the overall eighth. The Bad Boys took down the South Carolina Gamecocks 11-9 to move on to play the top-seed seeded Greenville Titans. The Titans entered the game having only giving up a total of three runs the entire tournament. Mayhem’s bats stayed hot against the Titans and Christian Davis pitched well, shutting down the No. 1 seed 9-1.

Mayhem played a tough Bulldog Force team, which had already upset tournament favorites RBI Rangers and Carolina Havoc, in the semifinals. Mayhem’s stellar pitching continued, led by Davis, Cole Smith, Nicholas Watson-Garcia, Tate Marks and Chandler Ball. Smith started the game against Bulldog Force with a shut out win 8-0, taking Mayhem into Championship Game against the X1 Twins.

The Twins outhit Mayhem in the title game along and the Bad Boys hurt themselves by committing several costly errors. The end result was a 14-3 loss.

While Mayhem was unable to qualify for next year’s Elite 32 tournament, the Bad Boys plan to play various Super NIT events to try punch their ticket to Orlando.
