Tigers thump Jones County 44-28

Alcovy's improbable turnaround from a 1-9 team and losers of the first two games this season just keeps getting more intriguing. And while the Tigers keep facing tough tasks they keep coming away winners. Maybe it's time to face reality. They're pretty good.

The latest statement came Friday in a matchup between Region 3A-AAAA's lone undefeated (in subregion play) teams. As it turned out, it wasn't much of a matchup after all as the Tigers (5-2, 4-0) pounded Jones County 44-28 to put a stranglehold on the subregion's top seed.

With two regular-season games left to play, Alcovy needs to win just one to secure the school's second ever state playoff berth and first home playoff game.

Once again the Tigers were led by an explosive offense featuring the usual suspects. Devon Edwards led the way with four touchdowns and backup quarterback Marcus Williams, filling in for Cornell White who injured his shoulder late in last week's game, hit Kenard Murry for two touchdown passes. Edwards also had an interception.

The Tigers finish with a road game Friday at Dutchtown before returning to Sharp Stadium for senior night against Woodland, Henry. At 4-0, Alcovy is now a game up on Jones County who finishes with two road games and a game-and-a-half up on Union Grove who was idle. The top three teams play the final play-in game in week 10 for a chance to advance to the Class AAAA playoffs. The top team in each subregion automatically qualifies for the playoffs and earns one of the top two seeds. Those two teams face each other to determine the overall region champion and No. 1 seed. The second and third place finishers in each subregion play each other to determine the other two seeds.

Friday's win also set a new school winning streak. The Tigers won four straight in 2009 - the school's lone playoff season. With one more win, the Tigers are guaranteed to host a playoff game. One more win will also tie the mark set in 2009 for region wins in a season with five.
