Council discusses changing charter

Social Circle council members are considering a change to the city's charter that would require its public safety director to report to the mayor and council rather than the city manager.

The suggestion came after the city was slapped with two federal lawsuits from former employees, both of whom sued both the city and the city manager.

One suit claimed ongoing racism led to the eventual termination of the city's first black police officer, Chauncey M. Dixon. That case was settled in August. Another case, where former Police Chief Steve Shelton claimed he was forced into retirement, is ongoing.

The suggestion came from councilwoman Angela Porter. Currently the public safety director reports to the city manager.
