LAWRENCEVILLE (AP) - Authorities at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center outside Atlanta say they've ended efforts to find a research monkey missing since June.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that efforts to find the 2-year-old female rhesus monkey included numerous searches of the facility's 117-acre field station in Lawrenceville.

Yerkes' director, Dr. Stuart Zola, said the staff also worked with Gwinnett County Animal Control to follow up on 26 reported sightings of the monkey in metro Atlanta.

The Gwinnett Daily Post, citing public records it obtained about the search, has reported that Yerkes veterinarian Joyce Cohen said in a report that she believes the 2-year-old female rhesus monkey is dead. Cohen speculated in one report that the 5-pound monkey might have been captured by a hawk, or fallen into a crevice and died
