Suit filed against Social Circle, city manager

A former Social Circle safety employee has filed suit against the city and city manager Doug White.

Steve Shelton, who formerly served as the city's director of public safety, alleges that he was forced to resign or be fired nearly two years ago. The lawsuit asks that Shelton receive back pay plus interest and compensation for pain and suffering and emotional distress.

Josh Viau, legal counsel for the city and White said that there is little to comment on at this juncture.

"...We are disappointed, though not surprised, that Mr. Shelton opted to pursue this course of action," said Viau in an email. "The city and Mr. White stand by the personnel decisions that were made, and we are confident that Mr. Shelton's allegations of unlawful retaliation will prove to be unsubstantiated."

Shelton's attorney Mary J. Huber, said the city had ample opportunity to resolve the issue and chose not to do so.

"They were inept to begin with and didn't take any action at all to resolve this without litigation. Nothing, nada," she said. "...It's a huge waste of everybody's time and money... Treat people with dignity and respect and you won't get sued."
