101-year-old man robbed

SAVANNAH (AP) - A 101-year-old man was attacked and robbed moments after he stepped off a church bus in Savannah, police said.

The man was walking home Sunday after getting off a Bethel A.M.E. Church bus and was jumped as he tried to open the door to his house, authorities said. The elderly man tried to fight back, and was thrown to the ground by the suspect, the Savannah Morning News reported (http://bit.ly/q093cB ).

The suspect grabbed the man's wallet, which held $61 and his identification card, and then ran off, police said.

"Most of the crimes we see are senseless, but throwing a 101-year-old man to the ground is reprehensible," said Lt. Racine Chaney of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police.

"Anyone who will do that will hurt someone and we need to get him off the streets," Chaney said.

The elderly man suffered minor abrasions on his face and hand; and pain on the right side of his body, police said. Family members drove him to an emergency room to be examined.

Police were seeking tips from the public, and they were urging anyone with information about the case to call CrimeStoppers.
