Social Circle judge steps down, new judge approved; Keener to step down in August

After 22 years of service, Social Circle Municipal Court Judge Rebecca Dally has resigned.

At a called meeting of the Social Circle city council, Dally told the mayor and council she was stepping down because it would be unethical for her to sit as a judge while supporting her husband, who plans to run for mayor of the city.

Mayor Jim Burgess recommended that Jeff Foster be appointed Municipal Court Judge and David Boyle be appointed solicitor. The recommendation was unanimously approved by the council.

The council also discussed if council member David Keener should step down as District 3 representative so the city could save money by having the post on the November ballot and not having a special election in March.

Keener voiced concern over his district lacking representation for any longer than was necessary and said that once he qualified for the mayoral race his resignation would be automatic. He asked to stay on until after the August meeting (which will be held Aug. 9) and would tender his resignation then. That will allow time to advertise for the Aug. 29-Sept. 3 qualifying period and to have that post on the November ballot.
