Man kills wife, self in Sandy Springs

SANDY SPRINGS - A suburban Atlanta man dropped his kids off at his sister's house and then asked his estranged wife to come to his condo, where he shot her dead and then killed himself, police said Wednesday.

Officers found the bodies of Irene and Jamal Mickens on Wednesday morning in the Sandy Springs condo complex where Jamal Mickens lived. Both died from gunshot wounds to the head, police spokesman Lt. Steve Rose said.

Jamal Mickens dropped off their 5-year-old daughter Ava and 7-year-old son Evan at his sister's house in McDonough at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Rose said. Jamal Mickens then called his estranged wife around 6 p.m. and she came over to his condo, where he shot her, Rose said.

It's not clear whether Jamal Mickens had planned in advance to shoot his wife or whether the two had argued, Rose said. Jamal Mickens did not leave any sort of note.

Irene and Jamal Mickens were married but separated, Rose said.

Irene Mickens' father called police Tuesday night to ask them to check on her after he was unable to reach her, police said. Officers went to the condo and knocked on the door but got no answer. Officers found the bodies after entering the condo Wednesday around 10 a.m.
