Body found in woods identified

The man whose skeletal remains were found in the woods off Crowell Road has been identified as Delbert Cecil Wimberly, who had been missing since 2009.

Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis said that Wimberly's remains had likely been there since he had been reported missing out of Walton County and that his family last had contact with him in 2009.

"After a lengthy investigation and examination of the skeletal remains we were able to do a presumptive identification," said Davis, who explained that items recovered with Wimberly's body helped to identify him. "We believe that he died of natural causes and no foul play was suspected," he said.

There is no way to tell Wimberly's exact cause of death because of the state of his remains, but Davis said that Wimberly's social history would lead them to believe his death to be natural.

Wimberly's son will be claiming his father's remains later this week. His body was found in May by a man looking for Civil War relics.
