Charges pending for molestation

Charges are pending against a man who reportedly admitting sexually abusing his stepdaughter since she was an infant.

Detectives with the Covington Police Department were contacted by Jasper County Sheriff's Office officials regarding the case since several of the instances of abuse allegedly took place in Covington. The man is currently under a mental evaluation and is not being identified until officially changed, which will happen after the evaluation.

According to Lt. Paul Dailey, the victim - who is now 11-years-old - had told her biological father's girlfriend about the abuse and then told her mother. The mother contacted the Jasper County Sheriff's Office and, with the aid of her pastor, confronted her husband - a man who had been in the victim's life since she was 3-months-old.

The man reportedly admitted to the abuse, saying that he touched the girl and that he forced her to touch him inappropriately as well. He then ran out of the home, telling his wife and pastor that he was "going to take a long swim in the lake."

Jasper County authorities were called but were unable to locate the man. Later, they were called back to the home when the man was found out back in a shed, bleeding from a self-inflicted wound to his foot. From there he was brought to Newton Medical Center to treatment and a mental evaluation.

Dailey said that warrants will be taken out on the man and when he is released, he will be charged accordingly.
