Storms give short respite from heat

William Brawley/

Strong storms rocked Newton County and environs on Thursday, dropping the temperature into the low 80s in a brief respite from the two weeks of 90-degree heat.

The National Weather service  issued a severe thunderstorm warning for central Newton County and east central Rockdale counties and in Walton County. The storm packed windgusts and hail. Hail slightly smaller than golf balls was reported outside Newton County Senior Services.

The high for Friday should again reach the mid 90s, and is forecast to stay there at least through Monday, according to the weather service. Expect overnight lows around 70, and only a 20 percent chance of rain each day.
