Interstate toll lane projects delayed

ATLANTA - The state Department of Transportation says it will hold off on a plan to build privately financed toll lanes alongside I-75 and I-575 in Cobb and Cherokee counties.

The DOT said Wednesday it will wait to see whether Georgia wins a federally subsidized loan before making any decisions.

Optional toll lanes would be built along I-75 from I-285 to Hickory Grove Road, and one along I-575 from I-75 to Sixes Road. The toll would fluctuate with congestion in the main lanes.

If the lanes are built, they would be part of a plan for a network spanning metro Atlanta.

The DOT board has approved a subsidy for the project of up to $450 million. Winning the $375 million federal loan could shave $100 million off the taxpayers' share.
