Clearing for round-a-bout project underway on 278

COVINGTON, Ga. - Trees are coming down to make way for the $19.3 million project on Highway 278 in Covington.

Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) District Two Communications Specialist Kyle Collins said the project consists of the widening and reconstruction of Hwy-278 from mile 7.97 to 10.43.

“The roadway will consist of two 12-foot lanes in each direction separated by a 24-food raised grassed median with 10-foot rural shoulders of which 6.5-foot is paved,” he said.

Also included in the project, he said, is a round-a-bout at the intersection of State Route (SR) 12 and SR-142. A traffic signal will also be installed at the intersection of SR-12 and Elks Club Road.

The scheduled completion date is May 31, 2020, he said. The work is being completed by E.R. Snell Contractor Inc.
