Oxford man sentenced in kidnapping case

An Oxford man has received a 45-year sentence with the first 17 to be served in prison for kidnapping, aggravated assault with the intent to rape and false imprisonment.

According to a release from the Newton County District Attorney’s  (DA) Office, Jerrod Lanier Aikens, 32, entered a guilty plea to the charges in Newton County March 20. According to the release, Aikens was sentenced as a recidivist, which means he must serve the full 17 years in prison.

According to a Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) booking/arrest report, Aikens was arrested by Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) Oct. 14, 2016. He was reportedly trying to avoid a safety checkpoint.

Once he is released from prison, according to the DA’s office, Aikens will be on probation for the remaining 28 years of his sentence. He will also be required to register as a sex offender. According to the release, he is also banned from Newton and Walton Counties.
