Foot chase for warrant leads to drug arrest

/

A Covington man was arrested on an outstanding warrant and drug charges after leading a Covington police officer on a foot chase Feb. 14.

According to his report, Covington Police Department (CPD) Officer Travis Pierce was on patrol on Geiger Street when he observed Darrick Howard, 42, cross the street in front of a vehicle. Officer Pierce reportedly recognized Howard and knew that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

When Pierce stopped his vehicle and attempted to question him, Howard reportedly began to back up and asked what he had done. He then turned and ran, ignoring the officer’s commands to stop and get on the ground.

According to the report, as Howard continued to run, Officer Pierce was able to tackle him in the backyard of a house near Geiger Street and Carlton Trail.  Officer Daniel Digby arrived and assisted in placing Howard in handcuffs.

When Howard was searched, officers reportedly found a large baggie of suspected marijuana, a smaller baggie of suspected marijuana, a digital scale and multiple plastic baggies. An active probation violation warrant for Howard was confirmed through CPD dispatch.

In addition to the warrant, Howard was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and obstruction of law enforcement officers.  He was transported to the Newton County Law Enforcement Center.
