Teen earns Eagle Scout badge

/

Craig Everett Edwards, son of Deborah and Ray Edwards of Covington, has achieved Boy Scouting's highest rank, that of Eagle Scout.

Craig Edwards, 17, is a member of Boy Scout Troop 222, sponsored by The Kiwanis Club of Covington, GA under the leadership of Scoutmaster Jerry Aldridge and William Wells, assistant scout master.

To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, community service hours, and demonstrate leadership by developing, organizing, and supervising an Eagle project.

The project must benefit a church or the community.  Edwards’ project benefited the Yellow River Water Trail, a committee that oversees the Yellow River recreation activities.

River recreation has become very popular and brings business, revenue, and amenities to the communities.  To promote the river, recreation, and region, Kiosks are required to hold information about topography, history, and safety.

Craig Edwards, after researching the launch sites, chose the Mount Tabor input on the Yellow River.   The site provided easy access; however, required a challenging design and sturdy construction due to the flooding that occurs at the curve of the river.

With the help of Tres Thomas, Civil Engineer of Covington, GA, a metal roof donated by Cutting Edge Laser facilitated by Richard Davis, a warehouse provided by Mosley Electric, and the advise, supervision, and volunteer work of both adult and youth volunteers, Edwards designed, built and installed a kiosk to withstand flood water.

Edwards began his scouting career as a Weebilo and continued through Cub Scouting to achieve the award the Arrow of Light.  He then crossed over to Troop 222.

As a member of Troop 222, Craig Edwards held leadership positions including Senior Patrol Leader and Chaplain Aide.  He earned all the required ranks leading up to Eagle Scout.

Craig Edwards is a senior at Providence Christian School where he is a member of the Varsity Cross Country and Soccer team.  After graduation, he is seeking a career in the military as an officer.
