Big shows in Covington and Porterdale

It’s really cool that we have so many spots to catch live music and I’m glad we were able to do a rundown of all the great music venues in Newton County throughout the last two weeks.

Now that you know where to hear great music, let’s see who will be playing this coming weekend.

First up is the C-town Revue at The Listening Room at Irish Bred Pub, 1115 Church Street, Covington on Friday, November 25. Doors open at 7 p.m. and there is no cover charge.

The C-town Revue is a multi-act show that I've been doing off and on throughout the years. For the first time ever, we'll be doing it at The Listening Room. This year’s theme is country.

Starting the night off will be Leeanne Blankenship, a true talent and fellow Sweet Harmony bandmate. Blankenship has an amazing voice to go along with her very proficient musical skills. Her aunt, and my wife, Ann McCart, will be joining her for several tunes and I'll be sitting in on one or two as well. In terms of covers, she's known for her incredible rendition of "Me and Bobby McGee," and her style and influences would be heavy on Janis and also the Dixie Chicks. And as I understand it, she's got a real treat lined up with a tribute to Leonard Cohen.

The middle act for the C-town Revue will be Dustin Bragg. I've covered Bragg a few times in this space and I'm a very big fan as you'll probably remember. Just like his daddy, Tiger, Dustin can lay down that Classic Country in a big, authentic way. The fella has a very strong voice. I got to catch most of his set at Community in Unity and was reminded again of how epic his sound is. And true story right here — I think he might do Copperhead Road better than even Steve Earle. This should be a real treat.

And the headliner for this one will be the supremely talented Whisper Whitlock. Whitlock, who recently inked a deal with a national talent and recording company, has hit the ground running in her young music career. She released her first album back in September and has been hitting Nashville pretty hard. A real-deal Country sound, she counts Johnny Cash as her biggest influence and is also a big fan of Miranda Lambert. A beautiful voice mixed with killer songwriting chops and impressive guitar playing makes for a big impression. You won't want to miss this one, folks!

Other performances include:
Whiskey Bent performs at Amici Covington, 1116 College Avenue, SE, on Friday, Nov. 25

Truly one of my favorite Newton County groups, Whiskey Bent — comprised of Marc Airington and Fluff Whatley — will be once again bringing their impressive and smooth sounds back to Amici. As I've mentioned before, what makes them such a joy to listen to is the ability to do multiple genres with total ease. Country, Classic Rock, Soul/R&B...it doesn't matter. They can do it all. It's always a fun time when these guys are entertaining on College Avenue.

Korby Bohannon performs at The Social House. Saturday, Nov. 26 at 9 p.m.

Bohannon is something different. A true fusion artist, he "creates a unique blend of music that fuses acoustic pop, soul, hip-hop, rock, and everything in between; the final output is a wide array of tunes that carries a message that caters to every listener in a different and unique way." The super-talented Bohannon, in addition to guitar, also plays piano and drums and is a very impressive beatboxer. In addition to performing, he also owns his own studio and record company and has produced many acts as well. This will be a very cool night at the very cool spot that is The Social House.

Marshall McCart wears many hats, but being a musician & musical enthusiast are chief among them.
