Extension hosting homebuyer workshop

You can learn about how to buy a home and manage money at a homebuyer workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 30 at the Rockdale County Cooperative Extension, 1400 Parker Road in Conyers.

The workshop is being staged by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and the Newton County non-profit Family Community Housing Association, which was formed in 2001 and is trying to revive itself after a few inactive years. To register, call (770) 787-4436. Lunch will be provided.

"I grew up in Newton County and went to high school here and I want to help people here," said the association's executive director, Julius Webb. "We're showing people the whole process. Once they leave this workshop they'll be fully educated on how to be a first-time homebuyer. A lot of people got stuck with teaser mortgage rates, because they didn't know. We want to change that."

The workshop will include segments about down payment assistance, money management, mortgage lending, homeowner's insurance, home inspections and appraisals and the attorney closing process.

Webb said he wants to offer foreclosure prevention and financial fitness classes. His non-profit is working with United Bank and McIntosh State Bank in Jackson, and is talking with groups including the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
