House panel clears Sunday liquor

ATLANTA - A House panel has given the go-ahead to a bill that would pave the way for Sunday alcohol sales.

The House Regulated Industries Committee on Tuesday voted to send the bill to the floor.

The measure - which would allow local governments to ask voters if they want to permit Sunday alcohol sales in stores - has already cleared the state Senate, where it's stalled for the last few years.

Georgia is one of three states that bans stores from selling alcohol on Sunday. The others are Indiana and Connecticut.

Supporters say the bill is a victory for local control. Opponents say it sullies their Sabbath.

Gov. Nathan Deal has said he will sign the measure if it passes.
