ID information stolen from Emory Healthcare

ATLANTA - Emory Healthcare says it has alerted thousands of patients about a fraud scheme in which Social Security numbers were stolen.

Hospital officials said Monday that someone stole personal patient information and used it illegally.

Emory officials say 77 Social Security numbers were used in a tax return scam.

Officials say 2,400 other patients were given 12-month identity protection in case they are targeted in the future.

Emory officials released a statement expressing regret to patients affected by the theft. Officials say the fraud was discovered by the Internal Revenue Service, which detected fraudulent tax returns. The IRS brought the situation to Emory's attention.
