Crime Briefs - Wanted for Battery

Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for battery against a man for reportedly beating his girlfriend.

The warrant was issued after a woman told Covington police that Jack Joseph Smith, 23, had assaulted her.

According to reports, the victim told officers that she woke up Monday morning to Smith’s cell phone alarm going off. She told officers that Smith had been out all night and she wasn’t sure what time he came home, but when she went to check on him she found him in the couple’s den on the couch.

She reportedly told officers that she could smell a heavy odor of alcohol coming from Smith and when she tried to wake him up he sat up and looked at her and then hit her on the left side of the face.

The report indicates that the victim went back into her bedroom and "cried for awhile" and then went back to try and wake Smith once more. According to reports, Smith "jumped up, forced her to the floor and began assaulting her." The couple’s 2-year-old daughter was asleep in the back room of the home at the time.

The victim’s mother reportedly told officers that she was on the phone with her daughter during this time and could hear her screaming, crying and saying "quit hitting me!"

Officers indicate in their reports that they saw swelling on the victim’s forehead and scratches on her shoulder and that she had a bloody nose and dried blood on her upper lip.
