Woman takes plea for vehicular homicide

A woman involved in a crash that claimed a man’s life earlier this year pleaded guilty to second degree homicide by vehicle in Newton County Superior Court on Nov. 23.

Maria Joann Strickland, 23, was charged with homicide by vehicle, vehicles to drive on right side of the road and improper lane usage. The charges stemmed from a wreck that occurred on Feb. 8 on Ga. Highway 36. According to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright, Strickland was driving a 1999 Buick north when it crossed the center line and hit a 1987 Toyota pickup head-on.

The truck’s driver, 29-year-old William Travis Watson, was killed in the crash. A woman and toddler were in the vehicle at the time and both were transported to Atlanta hospitals for treatment.

Strickland pleaded guilty to second degree homicide by vehicle, for which she received 12 months probation, and failure to maintain lane, which carried the same sentence. She is ordered to pay fines, fees and surcharges, as well as a fee to Watson’s family.
