Man fires gun into air after driver passes him

A Covington man was arrested for discharging a firearm in the city after allegedly firing a gun in the air after another driver passed him.

According to reports by officers from the Covington Police Department, a woman called authorities and told them that she had been traveling south on Alcovy Road and turned onto Herring Street where she got behind a silver Grand AM. She said that the driver of that vehicle turned on his emergency flashers and began hitting the brakes.

After doing this several times, she reportedly told officers that the car came to a complete stop in front of her.

The victim decided to go around the Grand AM at which point the passenger, later identified as Lazarus Smith, reportedly stuck a pistol out of the window and fired it into the air. She continued driving up Herring to the Emory Street intersection. During this time the Grand AM was allegedly behind her and she could see that Smith still had the gun in his hand.

During this time the victim was on the phone with 911 operators and officers were able to locate the vehicle on Interstate 20 heading west. The driver was stopped and Smith was arrested and transported to the Newton County Detention Center.
